The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Welcomes TOTE Scholarship Program
The Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s (MMA) state-of-the-art training vessel Patriot State recently made its inaugural port of call in San Juan, marking the start of its Sea Term. The event, hosted by TOTE and MMA, attracted nearly 200 students from Puerto Rico, along with leaders from various industries, non-profits, and government agencies. Attendees had the opportunity to tour the ship, explore its training facilities, and learn about its advanced technology and humanitarian response capabilities.
The Patriot State is part of the U.S. Maritime Administration’s National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) program, which aims to address the shortage of qualified officers needed to crew government and commercial sealift ships. Built by Hanwha Philly Shipyard and commissioned by MARAD, the NSMV vessels, including the Patriot State, provide top-notch training for future mariners and stand ready to support humanitarian missions during emergencies.
During the visit, Puerto Rican students were encouraged to consider maritime careers and explore MMA’s academic offerings, highlighting the importance of the NSMV program and the opportunities it presents.
