Revolutionizing Tidal Energy with Inyanga’s HydroWing Project
UK-based tidal energy developer Inyanga Marine Energy Group has revealed the groundbreaking design of its 20 MW HydroWing tidal energy project, set to be deployed at the Morlais tidal energy site in Wales.
The project will feature the first deployment of Tocardo’s T3 turbines, with each of the 20 HydroWing units equipped with two T3 turbines.
Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, expressed excitement about the project, stating: “The patented HydroWing design includes a number of innovative features, which together represent a step change in tidal energy design, increasing energy yield and reducing costs.”
Supported by the UK Government’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, Inyanga secured its 20 MW capacity through Allocation Rounds 5 and 6, with a demonstration phase planned for 2025 at Morlais.
Parkinson highlighted the cost-effective and efficient features of the HydroWing system, including a modular substructure for easy assembly, compact T3 turbines for simplified transport, and a wet-mate connection system for quick setup.
The innovative design of the HydroWing Quad Barge, along with the patented T3 turbine blades and optimal placement for maximum yield, promises a significant increase in energy production, up to 60%.
Andy Billcliff, CEO of Menter Mon Morlais, praised the HydroWing project as a potential gamechanger for tidal energy, combining cost reduction with increased energy yield to pave the way for global applications.
Inyanga Marine Energy Group’s commitment to advancing tidal energy technology is evident through collaborations like the MoU with Verdant Morlais for a 4.9 MW tidal stream energy project at Morlais.
Furthermore, the company’s crowdfunding campaign in October aimed to support the expansion of its patented tidal energy technology, HydroWing, showcasing its dedication to innovation and sustainability in renewable energy.
With the deployment of the HydroWing project at Morlais in 2027 and ongoing efforts to enhance tidal energy technology, Inyanga Marine Energy Group is at the forefront of revolutionizing the renewable energy sector.
