Ulstein Design & Solutions Secures Largest Aftermarket Design Contract for Cable-Laying Vessel
Ulstein Design & Solutions has recently announced securing its largest-ever aftermarket design contract for a cable-laying vessel owned by Taiwanese Dong Fang Offshore (DFO). The vessel, known as the Orient Adventurer (previously Polar Onyx), will undergo extensive conversion work to enhance its capabilities for cable laying operations.
The contract includes both basic design and engineering services from Ulstein. The vessel, originally built to ULSTEIN SX121 design, was delivered in 2014 as an offshore construction newbuild from Ulstein Verft.
Grant Hermanus, Technical Manager at DFO, expressed confidence in Ulstein’s professionalism and expertise, highlighting the importance of a successful delivery to customers.
The vessel was initially equipped with a Huisman vertical lay system (VLS) tower, with recent upgrades to incorporate a cable laying system. The upcoming conversion will involve relocating the tower equipment, installing a walk-to-work gangway system, and a 3,000-ton cable carousel from Huisman.
The conversion is set to be completed this year, with the vessel expected to be operational for cable laying activities in 2026. Ulstein Design & Solutions also holds an engineering contract for a new containerized accommodation unit for the Orient Adventurer.
DFO acquired the vessel from GC Rieber Shipping in 2021 and converted it into a dedicated cable-laying vessel. DeepOcean has secured a charter contract with DFO, bringing the Orient Adventurer into its fleet from early 2026 until the end of 2027.
