The African Energy Chamber Spotlights High-Impact Oil and Gas Drilling Campaigns in Africa
As the global hydrocarbon search continues to ensure energy security, certain oil and gas prospects and drilling activities are capturing more attention. The African Energy Chamber (AEC), serving as the voice of the energy sector in Africa, has provided insights into the ongoing and anticipated high-impact drilling campaigns in countries like Namibia, Angola, Nigeria, and Libya.
Exploration Programs Shaping Africa’s Energy Future
African Energy Chamber has identified TotalEnergies’ Venus appraisal activities off the coast of Namibia as a significant hydrocarbon play set to be pursued in 2025. While the final investment decision for the Venus development has been delayed until 2026, TotalEnergies is ramping up its appraisal efforts in Namibia’s Block 2913B to confirm reserve estimates and plan for development.
NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of AEC, emphasized the importance of promoting exploration to attract foreign investment and streamline project implementation in the oil and gas sector.
In Angola, Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP and Eni, is planning to drill multiple offshore wells in 2025 to unlock high-potential prospects in the Lower Congo and Kwanza Basins. This aligns with Angola’s goal of attracting more investment and extending its production horizon.
In Nigeria, Africa Oil is advancing deepwater drilling activities at the Akpo and Egina fields to enhance hydrocarbon production and resource recovery. Eni’s Sirte Basin program in Libya also promises new offshore drilling wells in the Mediterranean, with an offshore campaign in the Sirte Basin scheduled for the end of 2025.
Continued Efforts in Offshore Exploration
Eni has tasked China’s Hilong with the second phase of offshore transportation and installation works for its LNG project in another African country. Equatorial Guinea is gearing up for a new oil and gas licensing round to boost offshore exploration and production activities.
With these high-impact drilling campaigns and exploration activities, Africa’s energy landscape is poised for growth and development, ensuring a secure energy future for the continent.
