New Contract Signed for Advanced Research Vessel by Vard
Vard, the Norwegian subsidiary of the Group and a renowned builder of specialized vessels, has recently inked a significant deal with the US research organization Inkfish. The contract, valued at over USD$233 million (€200 million), entails the design and construction of an advanced research vessel.
Project RV6000: A Custom-Built Research Vessel
The newly commissioned research vessel, known as Project RV6000, is tailored for scientific exploration. It will supplement Inkfish’s existing fleet, including the RV Hydra and RV Dagon, to support global marine research endeavors. The vessel will collaborate closely with host countries to collect data for open-source repositories.
Key Features and Capabilities
The RV6000 is specifically designed for seabed mapping, submersible support, and ROV operations. With a length of 100 meters and width of 20.7 meters, it boasts a maximum speed of 15 knots and an operational autonomy of up to 30 days.
Equipped with an ROV capable of operating at depths of up to 6,000 meters, the vessel can support two manned submersibles. It features an A-Frame system aft, a large hangar for maintenance and storage, and an offshore crane with an AHC system for depths of up to 2,500 meters. Additionally, the RV6000 is outfitted with a hydroacoustic survey system for high-resolution seabed mapping.
Technical Specifications and Construction Process
The vessel incorporates hybrid power generation and propulsion systems for efficiency. Advanced anti-roll technologies ensure superior seakeeping qualities, minimizing movement and acceleration for optimal performance. The RV6000 includes laboratories, offices, workshops, accommodations, and recreational areas to accommodate up to 70 crew members and researchers.
VARD will oversee the entire construction process, from hull design and construction to outfitting and commissioning. Subsidiaries such as Seaonics, Vard Electro, and Vard Interiors will contribute to the project. The hull will be built in Romania, with final outfitting, commissioning, and delivery in Norway scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.
