Swedish Utility Vattenfall Invests in Nordlicht 1 and 2 Offshore Wind Farms in Germany
Swedish utility Vattenfall has recently announced the final investment decision for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in Germany. This strategic move marks a significant step towards sustainable energy production in the region.
The construction of the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms is scheduled to commence in 2026, with Nordlicht 1 poised to become Germany’s largest offshore wind project. The anticipated operational date for the wind farms is 2028.
Vattenfall has also revealed its intention to repurchase the shares in the Nordlicht cluster that were acquired by German chemicals firm BASF in 2024. This decision underscores Vattenfall’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio and fostering long-term partnerships in the industry.
Concurrently, BASF has secured access to a reliable renewable electricity supply through this collaboration. The agreement ensures a sustainable power source for BASF’s chemical production facilities in Europe, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.
The Nordlicht wind cluster, situated 85 km north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea, is projected to have a net capacity exceeding 1.6GW. Nordlicht 1 is expected to boast a capacity of approximately 980 MW, while Nordlicht 2 will contribute around 630MW to the total capacity. Once operational, the wind farms are estimated to generate approximately 6TWh of electricity annually.
The final investment decision for Nordlicht 2 is contingent upon obtaining the necessary permit, indicating Vattenfall’s adherence to regulatory requirements and environmental standards in its operations.
