Venterra Completes Metocean Characterization Study for SC-DMAP

Venterra recently announced the successful completion of a regional metocean characterization study for the South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (SC-DMAP), marking a significant milestone in Ireland’s renewable energy development. This study, conducted in collaboration with Ireland’s Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC), is a vital component in preparation for the upcoming Offshore Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS) Tonn Nua Offshore Wind Auction.

Advanced Numerical Modeling Techniques

The study utilized advanced numerical modeling techniques to generate a comprehensive 40-year hindcast dataset of metocean conditions in the SC-DMAP and its designated Maritime Areas slated for offshore wind projects. This dataset, encompassing a substantial timeframe, was carefully analyzed to evaluate both operational and extreme conditions, providing valuable insights for future offshore wind farm planning and development.

Key Study Elements

  • Collation of existing metocean measurement data in the SC-DMAP region.
  • Development and validation of site-specific hydrodynamic, wind, and wave models.
  • Statistical analyses of hindcast data to identify normal and extreme conditions.
  • Creation of comprehensive spatial maps depicting metocean conditions.

Driving Ireland’s Clean Energy Transition

The SC-DMAP plays a crucial role in Ireland’s Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) strategy, providing a roadmap for the development of offshore wind projects in the Celtic Sea. With Tonn Nua, one of the Maritime Areas within SC-DMAP, set to produce 900 MW of clean energy, Ireland’s commitment to renewable energy is further solidified.

Government Support for Offshore Wind

The proactive approach taken by DECC in commissioning this study demonstrates the government’s dedication to supporting Ireland’s offshore wind ambitions. By enhancing data availability and supporting ORE development, Ireland is poised to meet its renewable energy targets and drive sustainable growth in the sector.
