Dutch Shipping Company Vertom Group Launches Eighth Diesel-Electric Cargo Ship

Dutch shortsea shipping company Vertom Group has recently unveiled its latest addition to the fleet, the Vertom Joyce. The vessel, christened at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards on April 10, marks the eighth 7,280 dwt diesel-electric multipurpose dry cargo ship in Vertom’s lineup.

Measuring 118.60 meters in length with a beam of 14.30 meters, the Vertom Joyce boasts a full-box cargo hold capacity of 329,700 cubic feet. Equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system, the ship aims to optimize energy consumption and operational efficiency, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainable maritime logistics.

Arjan de Jong, CEO of Vertom Group, expressed his gratitude during the launch ceremony, stating: “The MV Vertom Joyce represents more than engineering and design, it reflects the values we share as an organization and as a community…”

The Vertom Joyce joins the LABRAX series, a collection of vessels designed to raise the bar in sustainability and efficiency within the maritime industry. With a focus on future-ready features and the potential for alternative fuels integration, the LABRAX series embodies innovation and environmental consciousness.

Previous vessels in the LABRAX series, such as Vertom Patty, Vertom Cyta, and others, have already showcased notable achievements in fuel efficiency and emissions reduction, affirming the success of Vertom’s sustainability initiatives.

Looking ahead, Vertom has additional projects in the pipeline, including four pink 10,700 dwt geared multipurpose vessels on order at India’s Chowgule shipyard. Scheduled for delivery in the coming years, these units will also feature a diesel-electric propulsion system.

Furthermore, the company recently placed an order for twelve 5,600 dwt diesel-electric vessels at Chowgule, with the first unit, Vertom Rita, already in operation. Anticipated delivery dates for the remaining vessels demonstrate Vertom’s ongoing dedication to expanding its fleet with modern, eco-friendly solutions.
