Introducing Viking Vesta: The Future of Ocean Cruising

Swiss cruise line Viking has taken delivery of its newest future technology-ready ocean ship, Viking Vesta, from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

The delivery ceremony was held on June 26 at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy.

Like all other Viking ocean vessels, Viking Vesta is classified as a small ship, with a length of nearly 239 meters and 499 staterooms for 998 guests.

The newbuild joins Viking’s fleet on the heels of the recent unveiling of Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, capable of operating with zero emissions. The vessel is currently under construction at the Fincantieri Ancona shipyard, with delivery scheduled for late 2026.

With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and a length of 239 meters, the ship features a hydrogen propulsion system that, combined with fuel cell technology, will be able to produce up to 6 MW of power.

Viking’s subsequent ocean ship, the Viking Astrea—currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2027—will also be hydrogen-powered.

As the latest addition to the cruise line, Viking Vesta has been designed with the future in mind, ensuring it can be retrofitted to incorporate these new technologies as they become available, Viking explained.

According to its orderbook, the company expects to take delivery of 27 additional river ships by 2028 and 10 additional ocean ships by 2031. With these orders, Viking will have 111 river ships in 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships in 2031.

One of the recently delivered eco-friendly ocean ships is Viking Vela.
