Wan Hai marks eco-friendly 13K TEU boxship series as complete

Taiwan-based Wan Hai Lines Unveils New Energy-Efficient Container Vessel

Taiwan-based shipping company Wan Hai Lines has recently celebrated the naming ceremony of its latest energy-efficient container vessel constructed by South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

The newly christened WAN HAI A20 was officially named on August 14 at Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard. The vessel is now ready to be deployed on Wan Hai Lines’ Asia to South America (West Coast) “ASA” service.

With an overall length of 335 meters, a width of 51 meters, and a draft of 16 meters, WAN HAI A20 is the final unit in a series of thirteen 13,100 TEU boxships ordered by Wan Hai Lines in 2021 and 2022 from Samsung Heavy Industries.

The environmental performance of these vessels has been significantly improved with the incorporation of newly designed engines aimed at reducing energy consumption. Additionally, the last three vessels in the series, starting with Wan Hai A18, have been equipped with wind deflectors on the forecastle to further enhance fuel efficiency.

All thirteen units have received the “Smart Ship” notation, allowing for the utilization of monitoring systems and communication equipment to gather real-time navigation data and ensure safe transportation services.

Wan Hai Lines welcomed the first vessels from this series, WAN HAI A07 and WAN HAI A08, in October 2022, with subsequent deliveries following in February the following year. The latest addition, WAN HAI A17, joined the fleet in June 2024 and was christened in September of the same year.

Following the completion of the 13,100 TEU series, Wan Hai Lines is set to receive an additional 30 newbuild vessels between 2026 and 2030. This includes twelve units ordered from South Korean shipyards in October 2024, with four of them running on methanol.

In April 2025, Wan Hai Lines signed a significant deal worth $816 million with SHI and HD Hyundai Samho for the construction of four dual-fuel methanol-ready container vessels.
