Wärtsilä Launches Carbon Capture Solution for Maritime Industry
Technology group Wärtsilä has introduced its carbon capture solution (CCS) to the global maritime industry, aiming to accelerate the decarbonization of shipping. The new ‘Wärtsilä Carbon capture solution’ has been proven in tests to reduce vessel CO2 emissions by up to 70%, offering ship owners an immediate way to comply with increasingly strict environmental regulations.
This innovative technology allows for the capture of CO2 from ship exhaust systems, which will have a significant impact on the industry’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2050 reduction target. The successful installation of the world’s first comprehensive, full-scale solution onboard Solvang’s Clipper Eris marks a milestone in the adoption of CCS technology within the maritime sector.
Earlier this year, Wärtsilä installed its CCS technology onboard a 21,000 m3 ethylene carrier for full-scale testing and optimization. The solution has been operational since the Clipper Eris set sail from Singapore in February 2025, supporting Solvang’s commitment to carbon emission reduction and sustainable maritime practices.
President and CEO of Wärtsilä, Håkan Agnevall, expressed the significance of CCS for the maritime industry, stating, “CCS is a game-changer for the maritime industry, and we are already seeing significant interest in the market for this solution. This new technology complements the industry’s efforts to reduce emissions from vessels and prevent stranded assets, aligning with shipping’s net-zero targets.”
CEO of Solvang, Edvin Endresen, emphasized the importance of adopting new technologies like CCS for decarbonization, stating, “Solvang has been at the forefront of advocating for and adapting to new technologies such as CCS for our deep-sea fleet. Teaming up with an experienced and trusted partner like Wärtsilä is crucial, and we are excited about the potential that its CCS offering will bring to our business.”
With the introduction of Wärtsilä’s Carbon capture solution, the maritime industry is taking a significant step towards sustainable operations and reducing its environmental impact. This innovative technology is set to play a key role in achieving meaningful sustainability goals within the shipping sector.
