Wärtsilä Launches Breakthrough Carbon Capture Solution for Maritime Industry

Technology group Wärtsilä has introduced its innovative carbon capture solution (CCS) to the global maritime industry, marking a significant milestone in the sector’s journey towards decarbonization. The new ‘Wärtsilä Carbon Capture Solution’ has been proven to reduce vessel CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent, offering ship owners an immediate and effective way to comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

The ability to capture CO2 from ship exhaust systems is a game-changer for the industry’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2050 reduction target. Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä, emphasizes the importance of this technology in advancing sustainability within the maritime sector.

The successful installation of the world’s first comprehensive, full-scale CCS solution onboard Solvang ASA’s Clipper Eris demonstrates the practical application and benefits of this technology. The CCS technology captures emissions from all exhaust gas sources, contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions from vessels.

Partnership for Sustainable Maritime Operations

Solvang ASA’s Clipper Eris ship, already equipped with various Wärtsilä products, including exhaust scrubbers, serves as a key example of the successful integration of CCS technology. Solvang ASA’s CEO, Edvin Endresen, highlights the importance of embracing new technologies such as CCS to drive sustainable practices within the deep-sea fleet.

Wärtsilä’s ongoing research and development efforts have resulted in the establishment of a dedicated research center and test facility in Moss, Norway, where the CCS technology has been rigorously tested and optimized. The successful collaboration between Wärtsilä and Solvang ASA underscores the potential of CCS in reshaping the maritime industry’s approach to emissions control.

Scalable Solutions for Decarbonization

Wärtsilä offers a range of scalable CCS sizes and configurations to accommodate different vessel types and operator requirements, both for newbuildings and retrofits. The CCS technology can be applied to various carbon-based fuels, such as HFO, methanol, LNG, and MGO, and seamlessly integrated with other emission reduction technologies.

With years of experience in SOx scrubbing and emissions control technologies, Wärtsilä is well-positioned to lead the way in implementing CCS solutions for maritime applications. The company’s commitment to driving decarbonization benefits for ship owners and operators reflects its dedication to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices.

Wärtsilä’s CCS offering represents a significant step forward in the maritime industry’s efforts to combat climate change and achieve long-term sustainability goals. By leveraging innovative technologies like CCS, the sector can pave the way for a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
