3D at Depth Celebrates 1,000th Subsea Metrology Project Milestone

3D at Depth, a subsidiary of Kraken Robotics, recently reached a significant milestone by completing its 1,000th subsea metrology assignment. This achievement was made possible through a project on a life extension initiative off the coast of Angola, West Africa, led by TotalEnergies EP Angola, a subsidiary of France’s energy giant TotalEnergies.

As part of a contract with an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor to conduct LiDAR spool metrology for TotalEnergies at the Girassol oil field in Angola, 3D at Depth deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with its Subsea LiDAR within two hours.

The entire operation, including a two-position scan metrology, was completed within four hours, with deliverables provided to the client within 24 hours. This successful project marked the company’s 1,000th subsea metrology endeavor, highlighting its expertise and efficiency in underwater inspection and measurement services.

Maïwenn Keryell-Even, Survey Engineer, and Simon Olive, Product Owner Survey and Positioning at TotalEnergies, praised the advanced technologies and touchless solutions employed by 3D at Depth, emphasizing the benefits of de-risking inspections, maintenance, and repairs while reducing environmental impact.

Established in 2011, 3D at Depth views the completion of its 1,000th project as a testament to its commitment to pushing the boundaries of subsea capabilities. By providing high-quality data and deliverables, the company aims to enhance operational efficiency in challenging underwater environments globally.

Euan Tait, COO of 3D at Depth, emphasized the significance of the milestone, stating, “Our team’s commitment to technology innovation and advancements will continue to ensure the highest standards of quality and reliability for clients worldwide.”

Exploring the Girassol Field

Situated 210 kilometers off the coast of Luanda in Block 17, the Girassol field, discovered in 1996, was the first of the Block 17 fields to commence production in December 2001. It represented the initial deepwater project in Angola and was developed using a subsea facility connected to a floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO).

In a recent initiative, TotalEnergies EP Angola and its Block 17 partners engaged Ocean Installer, in collaboration with Oceaneering, to carry out transportation and installation activities for the Girassol Life Extension (GIR FLEX) project in early 2024. Prior to this, TechnipFMC was responsible for installing flexible pipes and related subsea structures in 2023 as part of the GIR LIFEX project.
