Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Dive Team Receives International Award
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s dive team has been honored with a prestigious international award for their exceptional commitment to quality training, safety, and support of scientific missions utilizing various diving techniques. The recognition was bestowed by the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques at the European Dive Show, highlighting the team’s outstanding contributions to underwater exploration.
Commitment to Excellence
Comprising around 50 skilled divers who collectively conduct approximately 1200 dives annually in locations across the globe, the WHOI dive team plays a crucial role in supporting scientific research expeditions. Their expertise in diverse diving techniques, provision of essential equipment, and unwavering dedication to safety ensure the success and integrity of underwater operations.
One of the key initiatives supported by the WHOI dive team is the Reef Solutions program, which focuses on advancing solutions-based coral reef research through innovative engineering and autonomous technology. Additionally, the team assists in underwater vehicle operations, including the deployment and operation of REMUS, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) developed by WHOI’s Oceanographic Systems Lab.
International Recognition
The International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques lauded the WHOI dive team for their exceptional performance, stating that the award was granted “to acknowledge the excellence of the Diving Department, which trains outstanding scientists in the multiple facets of diving techniques, and to honor the enthusiasm and unwavering commitment of its divers who operate from polar waters to tropical seas.”
