Odfjell’s Bow Olympus: A Trailblazing Journey Towards Carbon Neutrality

The chemical tanker Bow Olympus, owned by Odfjell, is currently making waves as it crosses the Atlantic Ocean using a revolutionary dual propulsion system. Combining wind-assisted propulsion with a certified sustainable 100% biofuel, this voyage marks a significant milestone for the company, showcasing their commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry.

Technical Feasibility and Environmental Impact

Real-time data from the voyage indicates that the dual propulsion approach is not only technically feasible but also highly impactful. The vessel’s greenhouse gas emissions on this transatlantic journey are in line with the 2050 Fuel EU Maritime GHG intensity targets and IMO’s GFI Direct Compliance targets, setting a new standard for sustainable shipping practices.

Harnessing the Power of Wind

During Bow Olympus’ two cross-Atlantic voyages, the four 22-meter suction sails have proven their efficiency under various weather conditions. Odfjell’s crew and technology team have closely monitored the performance of the sails, highlighting the potential of wind-assisted propulsion in reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Exploring New Pathways

In addition to the sails, Odfjell has introduced another innovative element to Bow Olympus’ journey – 100% sustainable biofuel sourced from certified waste materials. This dual propulsion solution aims to pave the way for near-net-zero operations for deep-sea vessels, demonstrating the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Impressive Results

As Bow Olympus approaches European shores, the voyage showcases an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity compared to conventional fuels, without the need for additional technical upgrades. The incorporation of sails has also improved energy efficiency by 15-20%, further solidifying the vessel’s carbon-neutral credentials.

Looking Ahead

Erik Hjortland, VP Technology at Odfjell, expressed his excitement over the voyage’s success, noting significant fuel savings and emission reductions. The data collected will be used to inform future decisions and refine the company’s approach towards carbon neutrality, setting a precedent for sustainable shipping practices in the industry.

Overall, Odfjell’s Bow Olympus is leading the way towards a greener future for maritime transportation, showcasing the potential of wind-assisted propulsion and sustainable biofuels in reducing carbon emissions. With innovative solutions and a commitment to environmental stewardship, Odfjell is setting a new standard for sustainable shipping practices.
