WinGD Debuts X-DF-M Platform With Biggest Ever Methanol-fuelled Engine

Swiss marine power company WinGD’s first methanol-fuelled engine is set to be delivered to the shipyard after successfully passing factory and type approval tests. The ten-cylinder, 92 bore X-DF-M engine is intended for a 16,000 TEU container ship and is currently the largest methanol-fuelled engine ever built.

With 56 X-DF-M engines on order across various bore sizes, ranging from 52 to 92, in similar cylinder configurations and engine rating fields as diesel-fuelled X-Engines, WinGD is expanding its engine line-up to offer more decarbonization options to deep-sea ship operators. This includes the well-established X-DF LNG-fuelled engine platform and the new ammonia-fuelled X-DF-A platform.

WinGD CEO Dominik Schneiter stated, “Production of sustainable, renewable fuels of all types continues to advance, but long-term availability and cost remain uncertain. Ship operators can rely on WinGD to provide reliable, efficient engine designs that facilitate decarbonization across all potential fuels. As interest in methanol and regulatory clarity grows, we expect the X-DF-M platform to play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in global shipping.”

M Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine Global Launch Ceremony

The significant milestone was commemorated by a delivery ceremony held at the engine builder CMD in Shanghai. The event was attended by senior executives from WinGD, CMD, China State Shipbuilding Corporation, local government officials, global customers, partners, and representatives from eight classification societies. The X-DF-M type approval certification was signed, ensuring that the engine can be constructed to WinGD’s design by all engine builders.

A spokesperson for CMD commented, “It is a great responsibility to build the first engine of any type, especially one for an emerging fuel like methanol. Our inaugural methanol-fuelled engine performed exceptionally well in all tests, and we are excited to offer the X-DF-M platform as a new option for shipbuilders.”

The first X-DF-M engine will be installed on the fourth vessel of a new series, with the previous three vessels fitted with 10X92-B engines set to be converted to 10X92DF-M engines once the first newbuild methanol engine is operational. Dual-fuel methanol conversion packages will be made available for all WinGD single-fuel and dual-fuel engines.

Methanol, much like LNG, can be produced with low carbon emissions using biomass or renewable energy with captured carbon. The development of these fuel pathways, along with similar advancements in green ammonia and e-diesel, will be crucial for the energy transition in shipping. WinGD’s range of single- and dual-fuel engines support maritime decarbonization, regardless of the chosen fuel pathway by ship operators.
