InductEV Joins Zero Emissions Port Alliance to Accelerate Port Decarbonization

U.S. wireless EV charging provider InductEV has partnered with the Zero Emissions Port Alliance (ZEPA) to advance port decarbonization efforts. ZEPA aims to make battery-electric container handling equipment (BE-CHE) more affordable and accessible, thereby accelerating the transition to zero-emission ports.

InductEV’s innovative wireless on-route EV charging technology offers a range of benefits, including environmental advantages. The system enhances fleet utilization, reduces capital expenditure costs, and promotes sustainability, making it an attractive solution for fleet owners and port operators.

The technology operates using inductive charging pads, with in-ground pads activating instantly when paired with under-the-vehicle pads. InductEV offers wireless charging systems ranging from 75 kW to 450 kW, eliminating the need for additional real estate compared to traditional wired conductive chargers. This hands-free operation not only streamlines the charging process but also enhances driver safety.

By shifting from overnight depot charging to shorter on-route charging sessions throughout the day, InductEV’s solution minimizes the friction of electrification for power utilities and fleet operators. The system maximizes the use of clean energy, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient operation.

Currently operational at APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, InductEV’s wireless charging technology is set to be deployed at a major port facility on the West Coast of the U.S. in the near future.

James Wroe, InductEV’s Managing Director for Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, expressed enthusiasm for joining ZEPA, emphasizing the importance of wireless charging in the transformation of container ports globally. ZEPA, founded in 2023 by APM Terminals and DP World, focuses on key objectives to drive the adoption of battery electric CHE:

  • Increasing production capacity and reducing costs of battery electric CHE
  • Lowering battery and charging solution costs through standardization
  • Facilitating cost-efficient infrastructure roll-out for battery electric CHE and shore power
  • Accelerating the adoption of untethered battery electric CHE
