Wison New Energies Secures Feasibility Study for FLNG Facility in Suriname
China-based provider of clean energy services Wison New Energies (WNE) has been awarded a detailed feasibility study (DFS) for a newbuild floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility that will operate at Block 52 offshore Suriname, under the operation of Malaysia’s energy giant Petronas.
The FLNG unit is planned to be deployed at Block 52, situated north of the Surinamese coast. Petronas, the block’s operator and sole owner following the exit of ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Suriname in late 2024, will oversee the project.
For Wison New Energies, this contract represents a significant milestone, showcasing its FLNG technical expertise and contributing to the global energy transition.
“We are delighted to have been selected for this transformative project,” stated An Wenxin, Senior Vice President of Wison New Energies. “Leveraging our experience and global FLNG track record, we are dedicated to delivering an efficient and sustainable energy solution for Suriname.”
The FLNG facility will be positioned approximately 120 kilometers off Suriname’s coast, accessing the Sloanea gas field at a water depth of around 450 meters. It will process feed gas from the subsea production system to produce LNG and condensate for both domestic use and international export.
Wison anticipates that the DFS contract could pave the way for a front-end engineering design (FEED) study, supporting Suriname’s energy independence and positioning it as a key hub for offshore gas development.
Exploration and Discoveries at Block 52
Block 52, spanning 4,749 square kilometers, has seen several discoveries in recent years. In 2020, Petronas identified gas reserves with the Sloanea-1 exploration well, followed by the Sloanea-2 appraisal well in June 2024.
Building on these successes, Petronas revealed plans for a standalone FLNG project at the Sloanea gas field. Additionally, an oil discovery at the Roystonea-1 well has sparked further evaluation for potential development synergies with the gas discoveries.
Another significant find was made at the Fusaea-1 exploration well in May 2024, confirming additional oil and gas reserves in the Campanian sandstone reservoir packages.
Petronas’ Offshore Ventures
Aside from the Suriname project, Petronas and its partners are converting a VLCC into a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit for a deepwater project in Angola. Collaborating with TotalEnergies Angola and Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção, the venture demonstrates Petronas’ commitment to offshore energy development.
