CM Kong Kong: World’s First Methanol Dual-Fuel Car Carrier Launched in China

CM Kong Kong, described as the world’s first 9,300 CEU methanol dual-fuel car carrier, has been launched in China.

The launching ceremony took place in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, on May 21, 2025. The vessel, built by China Merchants Industry Haimen Base for China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), marks a significant milestone in green shipping.

The roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship boasts a total length of 219.9 meters, a width of 37.7 meters, and a designed speed of 19 knots. It features a cutting-edge methanol energy ecosystem comprising a methanol dual-fuel main engine, auxiliary engine, boiler, and supply unit. This innovative setup makes it the world’s first RoRo vessel to utilize green methanol as its primary power source, aligning with sustainable practices.

CM Kong Kong complies with the International Maritime Organization’s TIER-3 emission requirements, emphasizing its environmental credentials. The vessel is set to undergo commissioning and sea trials following its launch, with delivery expected in the latter half of 2025.

This groundbreaking vessel is just the beginning, as it signifies the start of a series of methanol dual-fuel RoRo units ordered by China Merchants Energy Shipping. This initiative heralds a new era in the construction of eco-friendly and technologically advanced large RoRo vessels.

The decision to order a fleet of 9,300 CEU car carriers in 2023 reflects the growing demand for vessels in the car transport segment. With Chinese automobile exports on the rise, surpassing countries like Japan, the need for efficient car carriers is more pronounced than ever.

The surge in vehicle trade, coupled with the shift towards pure electric/hybrid vehicles, is expected to further bolster the demand for car carriers. CM Kong Kong stands at the forefront of this trend, embodying sustainability and innovation in maritime transportation.
