World’s First Fully-Electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV) to be Built
UK-based Bibby Marine has partnered with Spanish shipyard Armon to embark on a groundbreaking project – the construction of the world’s first fully-electric Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV). This milestone marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the maritime industry.
The eCSOV will be equipped with Corvus Energy’s Blue Whale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), boasting a remarkable capacity of nearly 25MWh – the largest LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery system ever utilized in maritime operations.
Operating primarily on battery power, the vessel is designed to run fully electric for a complete day of operations. Additionally, dual-fuel methanol engines serve as a supplementary power source, offering reduced carbon emissions without compromising operational efficiency.
Utilizing an advanced power distribution system based on a DC grid architecture, the eCSOV aims to optimize performance and minimize energy losses. A notable feature includes the vessel’s ability to charge batteries while maintaining dynamic positioning during offshore operations, setting a new standard in the SOV market.
Commenting on this groundbreaking initiative, Pål Ove Husoy, VP Sales at Corvus Energy, expressed, “A fully electric offshore vessel is something the industry has been working towards for a long time and marks a major milestone in offshore vessel operations.”
CEO of Bibby Marine, Nigel Quinn, highlighted the vessel’s transformative potential, stating, “We understand that its delivery will be a game changer for our industry, speeding up our journey to achieve net zero emissions and leave other operators in our clean wake.”
The construction of this innovative vessel will take place at Armon’s renowned facilities in Vigo, Spain, a shipyard with a rich history of delivering top-quality vessels. The project brings together key partners, including Seaplace ship design for basic design and Longitude for the original concept design.
Gavin Forward, New Build Director at Bibby Marine, emphasized the selection of LFP battery chemistry for its enhanced safety features, longevity, and reliability, aligning perfectly with the vessel’s operational needs.
The eCSOV is scheduled to commence supporting offshore wind farm operations in 2027, with Corvus Energy equipment deliveries to the shipyard planned for 2026.
