NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia Nears Completion

The NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia has reached an impressive 80% construction completion milestone, according to a statement by Air Products, a US-based industrial gases company.

The significant progress includes the advancement of key components such as the green hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission grid. Milestone equipment, including wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolyzers, cold box, and pipe racks, have been received and installed, signaling substantial progress in the project.

“The 4 GW solar and wind power generation sites are on track to be completed by mid-2026, with the first ammonia product expected to be available in 2027,” Air Products revealed.

The NEOM Green Hydrogen Project, a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, aims to establish the world’s largest green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy. The plant is anticipated to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen in the form of green ammonia, offering a sustainable solution for transportation and industrial sectors globally.

The project leverages proven technologies, with a focus on integrating these technologies at a significant scale and utilizing ammonia as a carrier for transporting hydrogen to global markets. It is estimated that the project will contribute to reducing carbon emissions by approximately five million metric tonnes per year.

Situated on over 300 square kilometers of land in the Oxagon region of NEOM, Saudi Arabia, the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. The plant is designed to operate entirely on around 4 GW of renewable electricity generated from dedicated on-site wind and solar plants.
