Yinson Production and “K” Line Energy Shipping (UK) Partner to Develop Solutions for Liquefied CO2 Transportation
Yinson Production and “K” Line Energy Shipping (UK) have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the development and marketing of solutions for the transportation and injection of liquefied CO2. This partnership between the London-based subsidiary of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE) and Yinson Production aims to address the growing demand for carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions, particularly in Europe.
Joint Development of Floating Storage and Injection Unit
As part of the agreement, Yinson Production and KLES will work together to develop a floating storage and injection unit (FSIU) and a liquefied CO2 carrier. These specialized vessels are designed to support offshore CCS projects, providing a safe and efficient method for storing large volumes of CO2 permanently. The collaboration between the two companies will focus on offering integrated solutions for the transportation and injection of liquefied CO2 in the CCS value chain.
Advantages of Offshore Sequestration
Offshore sequestration is gaining popularity as a viable option for CCS projects, especially in regions where land availability is limited for onshore CO2 receiving terminals. FSIUs offer a flexible solution for offshore CCS projects, eliminating the need for extensive pipelines between onshore terminals and offshore storage sites. This approach is particularly relevant for projects like the Havstjerne CCS project in Norway, where Stella Maris CCS, a unit of Yinson Production, holds a 40% ownership stake.
Driving Decarbonization through Collaboration
By leveraging their respective expertise in FPSO operations, offshore engineering, and CO2 shipping, Yinson Production and “K” Line Energy Shipping (UK) aim to facilitate the development of innovative services that support the decarbonization of industries and society. The collaboration will enable industrial emitters to achieve their decarbonization targets more effectively, offering a one-stop solution for large-scale carbon transport and storage.
Shared Commitment to Scalable CCS Solutions
Lars Gunnar Vogt, Chief Technical Officer of Yinson Production, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with “K” Line, highlighting the potential to drive progress in the CCS sector and accelerate global decarbonization efforts. Kei Onishi, Corporate Officer of “K” Line, emphasized the shared commitment to scalable CCS solutions and the development of bespoke transport options for CO2 storage sites, complementing traditional port-to-port transport models.
Overall, the partnership between Yinson Production and “K” Line Energy Shipping (UK) signifies a significant step towards advancing CCS technologies and supporting the transition to a more sustainable future. By combining their strengths and expertise, the two companies are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of carbon capture and storage initiatives worldwide.
