Transforming Stranded Gas Reserves into Zero-Emission Power Generation

Four key players in the energy industry – MISC, Petronas, Aker Solutions (AKSO), and Clean Energy Systems (CES) – have come together to embark on a groundbreaking project known as the Zero Emission Power Station (ZEUS). This project aims to revolutionize the utilization of stranded gas reserves by converting them into zero-emission power generation solutions, both onshore and offshore.

The ZEUS demo front-end engineering and design (FEED) process was officially initiated on June 17, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur. The primary goal of this project is to showcase the capability of generating dispatchable, zero-emission power using high-CO2 natural gas streams.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

Zahid Osman, President & Group CEO of MISC, expressed his enthusiasm for the ZEUS project, highlighting how it aligns with the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. By integrating cutting-edge carbon capture technology with maritime solutions, MISC aims to not only advance sustainable power generation but also unlock the potential of stranded gas resources.

The collaboration between these industry leaders signifies a significant step towards realizing a lower-carbon future, with a focus on leveraging technology and partnerships to drive impactful solutions.

Pioneering Zero-Emission Power Generation

The ZEUS project represents a major breakthrough in zero-emission power generation, utilizing high-pressure oxyfuel-based thermal technology with integrated CO2 capture. Once validated, this technology could be scaled up for both onshore and offshore deployment, including floating power applications.

Mark McGough, CEO of Clean Energy Systems, emphasized the unique capabilities of CES’ technology in enabling sustainable solutions for the oil & gas market. The ZEUS project is a testament to CES’ commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.

Advancing Sustainable Solutions

The ZEUS demo FEED phase will be conducted in Malaysia to validate the system’s feasibility, paving the way for a final investment decision on the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase in 2026. The partners involved share a common vision of delivering sustainable and affordable zero-emission power solutions to support the global energy transition.

Jo Kjetil Krabbe, Executive Vice President of Power Solutions at Aker Solutions, highlighted the importance of turning proven components into an integrated system that operates at scale with zero emissions. Aker Solutions is committed to ensuring the technical robustness and reliability of the ZEUS project for deployment in diverse operational environments.

Overall, the ZEUS project represents a significant milestone in the journey towards a greener and more sustainable energy future. Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to environmental responsibility, these industry leaders are paving the way for a cleaner and more efficient energy landscape.
