Breaking Boundaries: Chemical Tanker Crosses Atlantic with Wind-Assisted Propulsion and Sustainable Biofuel

The chemical tanker Bow Olympus is making waves as it crosses the Atlantic using a revolutionary combination of wind-assisted propulsion and 100% sustainable biofuel. This milestone voyage, spearheaded by Norwegian shipping company Odfjell, showcases how existing technologies and fuels can be synergized to propel deep-sea shipping towards a future of net-zero emissions.

Real-time data from the voyage reveals that this innovative dual propulsion approach is not just a theoretical concept but a practical solution with tangible results. The vessel’s greenhouse gas emissions on this journey meet the 2050 Fuel EU Maritime GHG intensity targets and IMO’s GFI Direct Compliance targets, setting a precedent for sustainable shipping practices until at least 2044.

The power of wind-assisted propulsion has been put to the test during Bow Olympus’ recent transatlantic crossings. Equipped with four 22-meter suction sails, the vessel has effectively harnessed wind energy under various weather conditions, with continuous monitoring by Odfjell’s experienced crew and technology team.

In a significant milestone, Spanish company bound4blue installed the four eSAIL suction sails on Bow Olympus earlier this year, paving the way for this groundbreaking voyage.

“The results have surpassed our expectations,” remarked Erik Hjortland, Odfjell’s Vice President Technology. “Even in less than ideal wind conditions, we observed a remarkable 15-20% energy-saving effect, translating to significant fuel savings and emissions reductions. The sails have proven to be a game-changer in our quest for sustainable shipping.”

Utilizing an advanced AI-based weather routing system, Bow Olympus has maximized the benefits of wind propulsion, optimizing its energy efficiency on this transformative journey.

“Our findings indicate that even modest wind angles can generate noticeable effects, allowing us to operate the sails more frequently than anticipated. This not only enhances fuel savings but also provides stability and roll-damping benefits,” added Hjortland.

Complementing the wind-assisted propulsion, Odfjell incorporated 100% sustainable biofuel into Bow Olympus’ fuel mix for this voyage. Sourced from certified sustainable waste materials, the biofuel underscores the company’s commitment to exploring carbon-neutral pathways for deep-sea vessels.

As Bow Olympus approaches European shores, it exemplifies the viability of a dual propulsion solution in achieving carbon neutrality in maritime transport well ahead of schedule. With an impressive 85% reduction in GHG intensity compared to conventional fuels and a 15-20% improvement in energy efficiency, this voyage sets a new standard for eco-friendly shipping practices.

Odfjell’s proactive approach to sustainability is evident in its track record of implementing over 140 energy-saving devices on its fleet, significantly reducing carbon intensity compared to the 2008 IMO baseline. Looking ahead, the company is exploring next-generation solutions like wind propulsion to meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets for 2030.

“We are committed to leveraging the data and insights from this voyage to inform our future strategies. While there are challenges and uncertainties ahead, we are confident that we are on the right path towards carbon neutrality,” concluded Hjortland.
