Norwegian Oil and Gas Player Aker BP Secures Drilling Permits for Exploration Wells in the North Sea

Norwegian oil and gas player Aker BP has recently obtained drilling permits for three exploration wells in the North Sea off the coast of Norway. These wells, designated as 25/1-14 A, 25/1-14 B, and 25/1-14 C, are located in production license 873B and are set to be drilled this month using the Deepsea Stavanger semi-submersible rig owned by Odfjell Drilling.

The operator of the production license, Aker BP, holds a 47.7% stake in the project, with Equinor and Orlen Upstream Norway as its partners with 40% and 12.3% interests, respectively. The drilling activities are scheduled to commence in May 2025, aiming to explore potential oil and gas reserves in the region.

Exploration Rig Details

The Deepsea Stavanger rig, a sixth-generation deepwater and harsh environment semi-submersible of an enhanced GVA 7500 design, is well-equipped for the task. With the capability to operate in water depths of up to 3,000 meters and a drilling depth capacity of 10,670 meters, the rig is a reliable asset for offshore drilling operations.

Previously, the rig conducted drilling activities for Equinor, yielding mixed results. While some wells turned out to be dry, others led to significant oil and gas discoveries in the North Sea, showcasing the rig’s efficiency in exploration endeavors.

Project Developments

Amidst its exploration efforts, Aker BP has also been focusing on project developments like the Valhall PWP-Fenris project in the North Sea. This initiative aims to extend the production lifespan of the Valhall field beyond 2028, highlighting the company’s commitment to enhancing its oil production capabilities.

With strategic partnerships and cutting-edge drilling technologies at its disposal, Aker BP remains poised to unlock the full potential of the North Sea’s oil and gas reserves, contributing to the sustainable growth of Norway’s energy sector.
