Equinor Considers Terminating Empire Wind Project Due to Trump Administration’s Halt

Norwegian energy giant Equinor is facing a tough decision regarding its 810MW Empire Wind wind farm off Long Island. The Trump administration’s directive to halt construction on the project has put Equinor in a difficult position.

Interior secretary Doug Burgum’s order to stop Equinor from continuing construction has sparked controversy and concern among industry stakeholders. Critics argue that the halt sends a chilling effect on developers and undermines the certainty needed for financial investment decisions.

Burgum defended the decision by stating that more time was required to assess the project’s previous approvals. He criticized the prior administration for rushing approvals without sufficient analysis or consultation among relevant agencies.

Equinor’s president Molly Morris expressed urgency and concern over the situation, highlighting the significant financial losses the company is incurring due to the stoppage. With over $2.5bn already invested in the project and costs mounting up to $50m per week, Equinor is facing a critical crossroads.

If no progress towards a resolution is made within days, Equinor may be forced to terminate the project. Morris emphasized the importance of honouring contracts and financial investments made in the US, warning of the dangerous precedent set by halting a project mid-execution.

Efforts to resolve the issue have been made, including a meeting between Equinor officials and the US National Economic Council director. However, a meeting with Interior secretary Burgum, the key decision-maker in this matter, has yet to be arranged.
