Sempra Infrastructure Receives Final Authorization for LNG Export

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has granted Sempra Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, the final approval to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to non-free trade agreement (non-FTA) countries from its upcoming facility in Jefferson County, Texas.

This authorization allows for the export of approximately 13.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of U.S.-produced LNG from the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project to countries without an FTA with the U.S.

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright highlighted that this approval is a significant development under President Trump’s administration and marks the fifth LNG export authorization issued by the DOE, totaling 11.45 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d).

Sempra views this permit as a crucial regulatory milestone for the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, emphasizing the potential to reduce the U.S. trade deficit and enhance energy security for global partners.

CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, Justin Bird, expressed optimism about the project’s progress towards a final investment decision following this regulatory approval.

The Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, backed by a non-binding agreement with Aramco and an EPC contract with Bechtel, aims to contribute to the growing momentum of U.S. LNG exports and meet the demand for reliable and affordable energy.

While the project has received authorization from FERC and is expected to double the liquefaction capacity of the Port Arthur LNG facility, Sempra acknowledges the risks and uncertainties associated with completing commercial agreements, securing permits, and obtaining financing.

With the construction of Phase 1 underway and plans for future phases in development, Sempra continues to expand its LNG portfolio, including operations at the Cameron LNG export terminal in Louisiana and the upcoming ECA terminal in Mexico.

The Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project represents a significant step towards enhancing U.S. energy exports and strengthening the country’s position as a key player in the global LNG market.
