Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Elomatic team up to advance maritime industry’s green and digital transformation

Japanese Shipbuilder Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Elomatic Sign Framework Agreement for Business Collaboration

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, and Finland-based consulting and engineering company Elomatic have recently inked a framework agreement for business collaboration. The agreement was solidified during a signing ceremony at an international maritime event in Oslo on June 4, 2025.

The primary goal of this collaboration is to co-develop and implement advanced solutions that focus on enhancing vessel energy efficiency, utilizing alternative fuels, and driving the industry’s digital transformation forward. The initial areas of collaboration will revolve around air lubrication systems, modular fuel supply systems for ammonia, and digital scanning with data analytics, all aimed at benefiting various vessel types to support the industry’s transition towards decarbonization and digitalization.

One of the key technologies to be integrated as part of this collaboration is Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which aims to reduce hull resistance and fuel consumption in selected vessels. Elomatic’s MAmmoSS modular fuel supply system will facilitate the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel, focusing on safety and system flexibility.

On the digitalization front, Elomatic’s Aura APM platform will bring practical asset performance management and data analytics into daily ship operations. Additionally, the Reality Capture Solutions (RCS) offered by Elomatic will provide high-accuracy digital scans and 3D ship models to support planning, maintenance, and modification work.

In a statement, Shin Ueda, President of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, expressed his enthusiasm about the agreement, highlighting its significance in strengthening the company’s international presence and contributing to the maritime industry’s engineering development. Rami Hirsimäki, Senior Vice President, Marine at Elomatic, emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving innovation in maritime engineering and delivering value-added solutions to customers.

The collaboration between Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Elomatic is seen as a natural evolution of their shared focus on technical leadership and customer-driven innovation. The technologies covered by the agreement are already earmarked for introduction to their existing customer bases, with ongoing efforts to identify and prioritize areas of joint development to propel the decarbonization of the maritime industry.
