Webb Institute Celebrates 2025 Commencement Ceremony with Keynote Speaker George Economou

Webb Institute, a renowned undergraduate college specializing in naval architecture and marine engineering, recently held its 2025 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, June 21. The event, which took place on Webb’s picturesque waterfront campus, was a momentous occasion for the graduating class, highlighted by a keynote address from George Economou, the esteemed founder of DryShips Inc., the TMS Group, and owner of Cardiff Marine.

In his inspiring speech, Economou shared his personal journey and emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and embracing responsibility. Reflecting on his own challenges as a foreigner starting his career in the U.S., he urged the graduates to appreciate the privilege of graduating from an American institution and living in the country.

“Fall in love with the choices you will make. Don’t think about having, but about becoming,” Economou advised the eager graduates, urging them to prioritize personal growth and fulfillment over material possessions.

Drawing from his vast experience in business, philosophy, and global affairs, Economou touched on a range of topics, including climate change, artificial intelligence, and the significance of personal integrity. He underscored the value of pursuing one’s passions with dedication and integrity, rather than solely chasing financial gain or security.

Webb Institute President Mark Martecchini praised Economou’s message, noting how his own journey from Greece to MIT and global maritime leadership exemplifies the institute’s core values of Excellence, Community, and Opportunity. Martecchini emphasized how graduates are equipped with the tools to make a positive impact in the world.

Looking towards the future, Economou encouraged the graduates to prioritize humor, compassion, and hard work in their pursuits. He emphasized the importance of finding fulfillment in their chosen careers and the rewards that follow when passion drives their efforts.
