Lloyd’s Register Receives Authorization to Certify Remotely Operated and Unmanned Vessels

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has made history by becoming the first Certifying Authority to receive authorization from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to certify remotely operated and unmanned vessels (ROUVs) under the Workboat Code Edition 3 (WBC3) Annex 2.

The WBC3 framework mandates that remotely operated and unmanned vessels below 24 meters in length adhere to rigorous safety and operational requirements. These vessels must obtain certification through an approved Certifying Authority to operate in UK waters.

This recent authorization granted to LR allows them to offer end-to-end certification services for ROUVs, complementing their existing Unmanned Marine Systems Code. The certification process will address the increasing demand for unmanned and autonomous vessel solutions in the maritime industry.

With this groundbreaking development, LR is poised to lead the way in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of ROUVs in UK waters. Their expertise and experience in maritime certification make them a trusted partner for companies seeking to deploy remotely operated and unmanned vessels.

The certification of ROUVs is a significant step towards the integration of autonomous technologies in the maritime sector. LR’s authorization from the MCA highlights their commitment to innovation and safety in the evolving landscape of marine operations.

As the maritime industry continues to embrace automation and unmanned systems, LR’s certification services for ROUVs will play a crucial role in shaping the future of vessel operations. Their approval from the MCA underscores their position as a leader in marine certification and regulatory compliance.
