INPEX Masela Begins FEED Work on Abadi LNG Project in Indonesia
INPEX Masela, a subsidiary of Japan’s INPEX, has initiated the front end engineering and design (FEED) activities for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project located in Indonesia’s Masela block.
The FEED work for the Abadi LNG project in the Masela block includes defining the specifications of the facilities that will produce and process hydrocarbons from the Abadi gas field, as well as the onshore LNG plant (OLNG).
This FEED work consists of four segments: floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO), subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF), gas export pipeline (GEP), and OLNG. Contracts for all segments except OLNG have been awarded, with a focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) in each segment.
Contractor Consortia
INPEX has implemented a dual FEED method for the FPSO segment, involving two contractor consortia working in parallel to drive competition. The same method will be used for the OLNG segment.
The first consortium includes Technip Engineering Indonesia as the lead contractor, with Technip Indonesia and JGC Indonesia as consortium members. The second consortium features Saipem Indonesia as the lead contractor, along with Tripatra Engineers & Constructors, Tripatra Engineering, and McDermott Indonesia as consortium members.
FEED and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work will be awarded to the consortium that delivers superior technical and commercial services, ensuring a seamless transition from FEED to EPC.
Project Overview
Worley SEA Indonesia has been selected as the contractor for the GEP and SURF packages, reviewing and defining specifications for the gas export pipeline and subsea umbilicals, risers, and flowlines.
The Abadi LNG project, operated by INPEX Masela with a 65% stake, aims to enhance energy security in Indonesia, Japan, and other Asian countries while providing a stable supply of lower-carbon energy over the long term.
Expected to be one of the largest projects in Asia, Abadi LNG will produce approximately 9.5 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG from the Abadi gas field, contributing over 10% of Japan’s annual LNG imports. The project also targets production of up to 35,000 barrels of condensate per day and 150 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
Regulatory Approval
The development plan for the project was initially approved by the Indonesian government in 2019. However, a revised plan submitted by INPEX in April 2023, incorporating a CCS component, was approved in December 2023.
