The Future of Naval Warfare: Ultra-Large Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

In a bold move to revolutionize undersea operations, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has issued a call for the development of an ultra-large autonomous underwater vehicle (UL-AUV). This cutting-edge platform, known as the “Ocean Explorer” (OEX), aims to push the boundaries of undersea exploration and mission capabilities. With a focus on long-range endurance and modular payload capacity, the UL-AUV project represents a significant leap forward in naval technology.

Challenges and Opportunities

The UL-AUV initiative comes at a critical juncture for the Navy, as existing large AUV programs face challenges and uncertainties. Cost overruns and technical issues have plagued programs like Orca and Snakehead, highlighting the need for a new approach to undersea operations. The UL-AUV project seeks to address these challenges by fostering innovation and rapid development in autonomous undersea systems.

Potential Applications

One of the key objectives of the UL-AUV program is to create an “underwater mothership” capable of deploying a variety of unmanned undersea systems. By leveraging advanced technologies like the Yellow Moray torpedo tube launch and recovery system, the UL-AUV could become a versatile platform for undersea missions.

Another exciting prospect is the development of an underwater missile barge or arsenal ship. Equipped with vertical launch systems and advanced weapons payloads, the UL-AUV could provide a stealthy and powerful strike capability in contested environments. By integrating technologies like the Virginia Payload Module (VPM), the UL-AUV could significantly enhance its firepower and mission flexibility.
