Revolutionizing Offshore Energy Production: Blue Ammonia FPSO

MODEC and Toyo Engineering have recently achieved a significant milestone in the realm of alternative energy production by obtaining Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS for a groundbreaking Blue Ammonia FPSO. This innovative project aims to produce ammonia from the gas supplied by a traditional FPSO located nearby, marking a pivotal shift towards sustainable energy solutions in the offshore industry.

Blue ammonia, a key component of this project, is produced from hydrocarbons with a unique process that involves sequestering the CO2 emitted during production. By utilizing gas that has traditionally been reinjected as feedstock, the Blue Ammonia FPSO represents a bold move towards reducing emissions and promoting environmental stewardship in offshore operations.

The core technology of the FPSO includes a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system that will capture the CO2 generated during the conversion of associated gas to ammonia, as well as from gas turbine generators. This innovative approach not only enhances the sustainability of the project but also sets a new standard for environmentally conscious energy production in the offshore sector.

The hull of the Blue Ammonia FPSO was developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, showcasing the collaborative efforts of industry leaders towards advancing sustainable energy solutions. MODEC views the AiP as a crucial first step in the development of a floating alternative energy production solution and is committed to further refining the concept for maximum efficiency and impact.

Miguel Hernandez, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Offshore, emphasized the potential of Blue Ammonia in lowering emissions from offshore operations, highlighting ABS’s expertise in supporting the development of game-changing technologies. This collaborative effort between MODEC, Toyo Engineering, and ABS signifies a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious offshore energy sector.

Exploring Green Ammonia Production: A Sustainable Future Ahead

In a parallel development, Lloyd’s Register and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have embarked on a journey towards green ammonia production with an innovative concept that harnesses renewable energy sources. Through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last year, the two industry giants are working towards developing a green ammonia production unit that will revolutionize energy production in Europe.

The green ammonia production unit will utilize renewable energy to power electrolysis of seawater, producing green hydrogen that will be combined with nitrogen to synthesize green ammonia. This sustainable approach aligns with the growing demand for clean energy solutions and emphasizes the importance of leveraging renewable resources for a greener future.

Linked with offshore wind farms in Europe, the green ammonia production unit represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices in the offshore sector. By embracing innovative technologies and collaborative partnerships, the industry is paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
