The Future of Offshore Crew Transfer: Seagliders Set to Revolutionize Operations
The deployment of the seaglider technology, a modern “wing in ground effect” WIG craft, is poised to take a significant leap forward with plans for the first deployment for crew transfer to offshore infrastructure. ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S), a key player in the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) ecosystem, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with an Abu Dhabi seaglider operator to introduce cutting-edge seagliders developed by U.S.-based Regent into its fleet to enhance support for offshore operations.
Efficient and Sustainable Offshore Support
The companies involved have underscored the suitability of seagliders for offshore energy operations, with Regent’s crafts offering travel times comparable to helicopters and more than 70 percent faster than average crew transfer vessels. The anticipated speed of up to 180 miles per hour and an impressive range of 180 miles, powered by an all-electric battery system, position seagliders as a game-changer in offshore logistics.
The flagship design, the Viceroy seaglider, is designed to accommodate 12 passengers or carry up to 3,500lbs (1,600kg) of payload, offering multiple efficiencies for the offshore energy industry logistics.
Progress and Innovation
Regent has made significant strides in the development of its vessels, with prototype testing underway and plans for full-scale prototype testing in the near future. The innovative design allows the crafts to seamlessly transition from floating at a dock to skimming over open waters, utilizing ground effect for lift and reduced drag. Certified and regulated as maritime vessels, seagliders from Regent tout low operational costs and emission-free benefits due to their reliance on battery power.
Noteworthy interest has been expressed in seaglider technology for commuter and short-haul airline routes, with ferry companies and prominent investors like Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) recognizing the potential of this innovative solution.
Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
REGENT, in collaboration with ADIO and DOT, is set to transform the transportation landscape in UAE by integrating seaglider services into the existing infrastructure. The strategic partnership with ADNOC underscores a commitment to innovation and sustainability in the energy sector, with the potential for seagliders to revolutionize offshore crew transfer operations.
Billy Thalheimer, Co-founder and CEO of REGENT, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “Seagliders will drastically reduce the time, cost, and emissions of offshore energy logistics, setting a new standard for the industry.”
As the maritime industry embraces technological advancements and sustainable solutions, seagliders are poised to redefine offshore operations and pave the way for a more efficient and environmentally conscious future.
