AET, Fleetzero Team Up for ‘World’s Longest-Range’ Hybrid-Electric Vessel

AET and Fleetzero Partner to Develop World’s Longest-Range Plug-In Hybrid-Electric Vessel

AET, a member of the MISC Group and owner and operator of maritime transportation assets, has recently signed an agreement with Fleetzero, a leading supplier of modular marine batteries for hybrid and electric ships. The collaboration aims to develop the world’s longest-range plug-in hybrid-electric vessel, marking a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices.

As part of the agreement, one of AET’s Lightering Support Vessels (LSV) will undergo a retrofit with a plug-in hybrid-electric system. This innovative technology will enable the vessel to operate primarily on battery power, resulting in a remarkable 82% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional LSVs on a tank-to-wake basis.

The environmental benefits of this initiative are substantial, with an estimated avoidance of 1,220 tonnes of greenhouse gases. In addition to reducing emissions, the plug-in hybrid-electric system will also lead to significant fuel savings and lower maintenance costs, all while upholding high safety standards.

Decarbonization and Energy Transition

Mr. Zahid Osman, President & Group CEO of MISC Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing its importance in the company’s decarbonization journey and energy transition strategy. He highlighted the commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions in the maritime industry, stating, “By integrating plug-in hybrid electric solutions into our fleet, we are transforming ambition into action to deliver more energy with fewer emissions.”

This pilot project not only demonstrates AET’s dedication to sustainability but also serves as a testing ground to evaluate the feasibility and operational performance of this cutting-edge technology. The success of this initiative could potentially lead to the deployment of plug-in hybrid-electric systems across AET’s and even MISC’s fleet in the future.

Advancing Marine Electrification

Steven Henderson, Co-Founder & CEO of Fleetzero, shared his excitement about the project, highlighting its potential to advance marine electrification in a commercially viable manner. He emphasized the significant impact on emissions reduction from vessel operations and underscored Fleetzero’s focus on enhancing mariner safety and operational efficiency.

As former mariners themselves, the team at Fleetzero designed their technology with a deep understanding of the maritime industry’s needs. Their solution is not only geared towards reducing emissions and improving efficiency but also prioritizes the safety and ease of operations for mariners.
