DEEP Manufacturing Revolutionizes Pressure Vessel Production with Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing

DEEP Manufacturing Limited (DML) has achieved a major milestone by securing DNV approval in principle (AiP) for its innovative use of wire arc additive manufacturing in the production of steel for pressure vessels designed for human occupancy.

Located in Avonmouth, UK, DEEP Manufacturing boasts an Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence equipped with 20 Wire Arc systems, making it one of the largest hubs for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) globally.

WAAM technology facilitates the fabrication of large-scale metal components with intricate geometries. Unlike traditional powder-based additive manufacturing methods, WAAM utilizes an electric arc to melt wire feedstock, resulting in superior material quality in the final product.

One of the key advantages of WAAM over conventional manufacturing processes like forging is its enhanced production speed and ability to accommodate complex design requirements.

Originally developed to address the unique pressure vessel manufacturing needs of DEEP, a prominent ocean technology and exploration company, WAAM has now emerged as the go-to solution for the subsea supply chain.

Each robotic system at DML can produce metallic parts measuring up to three meters in diameter, while the synchronized six-arm configuration enables the production of components with volumes reaching 6.1 meters in diameter and 3.2 meters in height.

As DEEP Manufacturing nears the final stages of the audit process to obtain DNV approval for manufacturing pressure vessels intended for human occupancy, Peter Richards, the company’s CEO, emphasizes the urgency for industry players to embrace innovation and adapt to the changing landscape.

Richards stated, “If subsea companies continue to rely on traditional forge and casting methods, they risk lagging behind. It is imperative to shift towards a mindset of innovation and take proactive measures to enhance industry resilience. This marks a pivotal moment for our sector, and it is crucial to fully leverage the benefits that additive manufacturing brings.”

DEEP Manufacturing is poised to revolutionize pressure vessel production for the offshore, maritime, and energy sectors with its cutting-edge wire arc additive manufacturing technology. By offering rapid production timelines and expertise in large-format metal additive manufacturing, the company aims to drive innovation and resilience across industries.
