CMA CGM Expands Investment in Algeria’s Port Sector
CMA CGM is moving ahead with its investment deal in Algeria. The French carrier is strategically building its logistics and terminal operations in the Mediterranean region, with recent announcements regarding modernization projects in Syria and Lebanon. The company’s CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on June 2 to discuss upcoming port projects in Algeria.
The meeting, which was initially scheduled for April, was delayed due to a diplomatic dispute between Algeria and France. Despite these challenges, CMA CGM remains committed to its projects in Algeria. Saadé expressed optimism about the potential of the country, stating, “We can be an ally of Algeria in developing infrastructure and making Algerian ports true regional hubs.”
Algeria is actively diversifying its economy away from reliance on oil and gas exports, making the revamp of its port sector a crucial aspect of this transition. CMA CGM sees an opportunity to contribute to this transformation by modernizing ports such as Oran and Djen Djen.
In Oran, CMA CGM plans to lease the container terminal through its subsidiary, CMA Terminals, with the goal of expanding its capacity to handle over one million TEUs annually. A technical team from CMA Terminals is finalizing an investment plan for the Oran port, expected to be revealed by the end of the year.
Additionally, CMA CGM is exploring the possibility of launching a feeder shipping line between Marseille and Oran to improve intra-Mediterranean connections. This service, operated by its subsidiary La Méridionale, aims to reduce transit times to less than 48 hours.
With these developments, CMA CGM is poised to strengthen its presence in the Mediterranean region and support Algeria in its port sector modernization efforts. The company’s investments align with Algeria’s goals of enhancing its infrastructure and becoming a key player in the global shipping industry.
