Purus Commences Construction of New Medium-Sized Gas Carrier for Ammonia Transport

Purus, a leading provider of maritime services for gas transport and offshore wind industries, is excited to announce the commencement of the construction of another medium-sized gas carrier (MGC) dedicated to ammonia transport.

Steel cutting for the 45,000 cubic meter MGC began on February 5, 2025, at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, marking the start of a new milestone for Purus in expanding its fleet.

Scheduled for delivery in 2026, this ammonia-ready vessel is part of a series of four gas carriers being built for Purus at the South Korean shipyard, specifically designed to store and transport low-carbon gases, with a primary focus on ammonia.

Furthermore, Purus has placed an order for another two 45,000 cbm dual-fuel ammonia-ready MGCs from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, expected to be delivered in 2027. These newbuilds will feature an innovative cargo handling system aimed at maximizing flexibility and efficiency in gas transport operations.

Upon completion, these vessels will increase Purus’ ammonia transport fleet to a total of nine units, which includes the three 40,000 cbm MGCs currently in operation.

In a recent development, Purus took part in a groundbreaking co-loaded shipment operation involving both ammonia and propane from the U.S. to Europe, marking a significant achievement in the company’s efforts to advance sustainable and efficient gas transport solutions.
