DFDS Launches New Weekly Freight Service Between Spain and the Netherlands

Danish shipping company DFDS is set to introduce a weekly freight service connecting Spain and the Netherlands, catering to the needs of industrial customers, freight forwarders, and project cargo owners. The new route will provide a direct ferry link from southern to central Europe, connecting the ports of Vilagarcía and Rotterdam.

One of the key highlights of this new service is the partnership DFDS has forged with Hydro, a global aluminum and energy company. Through this collaboration, Hydro will benefit from weekly shipments of aluminum starting from the end of May.

Mathieu Girardin, Head of the Ferry Division at DFDS, expressed his enthusiasm for the new route, stating, “This new route offers significant potential which we believe will benefit the broader market and aligns perfectly with our focus on organic growth. We are excited to establish a strong partnership with Hydro, enhancing their supply chain with improved connections to and from Northern Europe and Iberia, further demonstrating that we are a relevant strategic partner for larger companies.”

Gerd Aalborg Aas, Vice President and Head of Logistics in Hydro’s Aluminum Metal business area, emphasized the importance of optimizing operations and logistics. The collaboration with DFDS will facilitate the implementation of a RoRo (roll-on-roll-off) solution for transporting aluminum products, ensuring safety, efficiency, and timely delivery for customers.

The RoRo solution involves rolling aluminum products onto cargo ships, eliminating the need for cranes and reducing safety risks associated with traditional loading methods. DFDS will operate the Belgia Seaways vessel on this route, boasting a capacity of 2660 lanemeters.
