The Wadden Islands on the Path to Energy Independence with PROSIT Project

The Friesland Province recently announced a significant allocation of €625,000 to the PROSIT project, aimed at assisting the Wadden Islands in their journey towards energy self-sufficiency by harnessing tidal currents.

PROSIT, building on SeaQurrent’s successful TidalKite demonstration near Ameland, utilizes tidal currents to generate electricity and has been undergoing testing in the Borndiep channel.

“The TidalKites are strategically positioned in the water just off the coast, directly contributing to the local energy supply. This initiative aligns perfectly with the Wadden Islands’ long-term goal of producing their own energy,” stated the Friesland Province in a recent social media update.

Although the system has shown promising results, further adjustments are required to accommodate the unique tidal dynamics of the Wadden Sea. The funding from the province will facilitate these necessary enhancements.

“Anticipated outcomes include increased energy yield and a reduced ecological footprint. The ultimate aim is to sustainably generate half of the energy required by the Wadden Islands,” highlighted the Friesland Province.

In 2023, SeaQurrent, a Dutch company, initiated the first tests on its TidalKite tidal energy device in preparation for offshore deployment in the Netherlands.

As part of the SHINES project, Inyanga Marine Energy Group will oversee offshore operations for SeaQurrent’s TidalKite device at the Paimpol-Bréhat test site in France. The site will also host Inyanga’s 600 kW HydroWing tidal turbine, facilitating the real-sea deployment and grid integration of both technologies.
