Fire destroys dry-docked Sanlorenzo yacht

Footage has been shared of a major fire which engulfed a large yacht earlier this week. The incident occurred in Spain’s Puerto Sotogrande.

31.7 metre yacht Elysium caught fire while dry docked. According to local reports and local authorities, the yacht had been brought in for repairs in September this year.

Initially firefighters worked to cool down the fire, using water and foam. According to the mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, the boat had about 8,000 litres of fuel inside. Local residents and businesses were concerned about the fire spreading – the boat in question was about 30 metres from a local hotel.

Various fire stations from the provincial fire brigade consortium worked overnight and into the next day.

The fire was first seen by a worker who told the port authorities he could see smoke coming from the stern of the ship.

The port’s initial report states that three maintenance service guards immediately deployed 12 fire hoses, projecting water onto the vessel. The first team of firefighters arrived with a motor-bomb truck at 18:58, containing the perimeter of the fire. By 20:00, due to the smoke, the Civil Guard began evacuating affected areas and told residents to stay in their homes with the windows shut.

The firefighters started spraying foam at 21:00 and within an hour, due to the large amount of water and foam that was being used, the port decided to activate its internal contingencies plan. This meant a containment barrier was used to cover the entire water front access. And that, according to the port’s statement, was effective. During an early morning inspection on Tuesday, no pollution was observed.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but no foul play is suspected. Seemingly, according to the same source, electrical work had taken place in the engine room not long before the fire took hold.

At 01:00 on the Tuesday morning, the fire was under control. The firefighters continued to cool the boat to avoid the fire reactivating. At lunchtime, a crane went into action to break apart the upper structure to cool the boat even faster. Within a couple of hours the crane operator began to remove the damaged top. This then allowed the firefighters to finish cooling the boat, and completely extinguish the fire at 16:00.

By late Tuesday the task of totally extinguishing the fire was completed, says port officials via a FaceBook statement.

Security was in place throughout Tuesday night to detect possible reactivations.

The management of Puerto Sotogrande has thanked all the teams onsite who helped control the blaze.

Elysium is a 2003 Sanlorenzo build, part of the older SL104 series (Sanlorenzo recently announced it was undergoing a corporate restructure). It’s been on the charter market on and off for as much as €57,000 ($59,400) per week, and offers accommodation for as many as 12 guests across five cabins and up to six crew in separate quarters, according to online sources.
