Egyptian Navy Receives New Ras Alhekma Terminal Support/Escort Tug

The Ras Alhekma terminal support/escort tug has been delivered to the Egyptian Navy in Alexandria, Egypt. Named after a coastal region on Egypt’s Mediterranean shoreline, the Ras Alhekma is the first of a series of five RAstar 3200-W series tugs being built at Alexandria Shipyard.

The RAstar escort series tug is equipped with a unique sponsoned hull form developed by Robert Allan Ltd., providing enhanced escort towing and seakeeping performance. During trials, the Ras Alhekma received positive feedback from the owner for its high bollard pull, power, maneuverability, and low noise levels – thanks to noise treatments designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and applied by the shipyard.

Alexandria Shipyard, one of the largest shipyards in Africa and the Middle East, handled the production design of the Ras Alhekma using its own technical team.

Main Particulars of Ras Alhekma:

  • Length overall (including fenders): 32.7 meters
  • Beam, moulded: 13.2 meters
  • Depth, moulded: 5.5 meters
  • Gross tonnage: 498
  • Class: Bureau Veritas

Tank capacities:

  • Fuel oil: 208m3
  • Potable water: 31m3

Sea trial results exceeded expectations, with the Ras Alhekma boasting 86 tonnes of bollard pull and a speed of 14.1 knots, surpassing the owner’s performance requirements for this design.

The delivery of the Ras Alhekma marks a significant addition to the Egyptian Navy’s fleet, enhancing their capabilities for terminal support and escort operations along the Mediterranean coastline. With its advanced design and impressive performance, the Ras Alhekma is set to serve the Navy effectively in its maritime operations.
