Dutch Vessel Fugro Mercator Runs Aground Offshore Italy
Dutch geological data specialist Fugro recently faced an unfortunate incident when its vessel, Fugro Mercator, ran aground offshore Italy amidst deteriorating weather conditions.
On March 22, Fugro received a report that the geophysical survey vessel had grounded on the north coast of Elba in Italy. Swift action was taken as the authorities were immediately notified, and the Italian coastguard arrived on site to provide support and monitor the situation.
All 11 crew members aboard the Fugro Mercator were successfully evacuated and brought safely ashore. Currently, a salvage operation is being coordinated with international experts and local officials to address the situation.
While the exact cause of the grounding is still under investigation, Fugro mentioned that the 42-metre research vessel was conducting survey work off the coast of Elba when it sought shelter due to worsening weather conditions.
Following the incident, Fugro has initiated a comprehensive review of the event in accordance with its standard procedures to understand the circumstances leading up to the grounding.
Despite the setback, Fugro remains committed to maintaining high safety standards and ensuring the well-being of its crew members during operations at sea. The company continues to prioritize safety and environmental protection in all its maritime activities.
