Gibraltar ship repair yard Gibdock has recently finished a significant project in the offshore market by completing the repair and renewal of Technip’s flagship vessel, Deep Blue – a specialized pipelay and subsea construction fleet.

Technip, a repeat customer of Gibdock, entrusted the yard with relocating Deep Blue from the U.S Gulf for the necessary works before redeploying the vessel outside Europe once the repairs were completed.

Deep Blue is a crucial asset in ultra-deepwater field developments, equipped with reel-lay, J-lay, and flexi-lay technologies. With twin 2,800 tonnes capacity reels, the vessel can lay pipes and cables at depths of up to 3,000 meters.

During the scheduled drydocking, Gibdock conducted steel and piping renewal works, hull and tank surface blasting and recoating, as well as machinery overhauls to ensure Deep Blue remains at its peak performance for the next five years.

John Taylor, Gibdock’s managing director, expressed pride in working with Technip on such a significant project, highlighting the team’s expertise and dedication in delivering high-quality maintenance and repair services while upholding safety and operational excellence.

The project involved around 600 personnel working round the clock, seven days a week, with the vessel being raised 3.7 meters to facilitate the removal and overhaul of the ship’s eight thrusters in Gibdock’s Dock No. 1.

John Barnard, commercial director at Gibdock, emphasized the successful collaboration with Technip in planning and communication throughout the project, looking forward to future opportunities to work together.

Completion of the works on Deep Blue adds to Gibdock’s portfolio of offshore clients, showcasing their strategic location, experienced team, and commitment to excellence in servicing various vessel types, including offshore assets.

With a track record of meeting the needs of discerning clients, Gibdock continues to be a preferred choice for offshore vessel maintenance and repairs, solidifying its reputation in the maritime industry.
