Change in Leadership at Ørsted: Mads Nipper Steps Down as CEO

The renewable energy sector is witnessing a significant shift in leadership as Mads Nipper, the chief executive officer of Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted, has announced his decision to step down from his role. Nipper, who took on the CEO position in January 2021, will officially relinquish his duties on February 1.

Replacing Nipper as the new CEO will be Rasmus Errboe, currently serving as the deputy CEO and chief commercial officer at Ørsted. Errboe, who has been with the company since 2012, will assume the role of group president and CEO upon Nipper’s departure.

Prior to his tenure at Ørsted, Nipper held various leadership positions, including CEO and group president of Grundfos, the largest pump manufacturer globally. He also had notable roles at LEGO, the renowned construction toy production company.

Errboe’s journey at Ørsted began in 2012, and he became a member of the executive management team in 2022. His contributions include overseeing the IPO of Ørsted in 2016 and the divestment of the company’s oil and gas business in 2017.

Adapting to Industry Challenges

The decision for Nipper to step down comes amidst a rapidly changing landscape in the renewable energy market. Lene Skole, chairperson of Ørsted, acknowledged the evolving challenges in the offshore wind industry, from supply chain disruptions to regulatory changes, prompting the need for a leadership transition.

Errboe expressed his commitment to leading Ørsted through these turbulent times, emphasizing the company’s strong foundation and unique capabilities. He is determined to steer Ørsted towards a successful transformation to navigate the current headwinds facing the industry.

Looking Ahead

In a statement on his LinkedIn profile, Nipper acknowledged the complexities of leading a company in an industry facing numerous challenges. He recognized the need for a different focus moving forward, prompting his decision to step down as CEO.

As Nipper transitions out of Ørsted, he will be redirecting his efforts towards the chairmanship of FLSmidth, a company specializing in engineering, equipment, and services for the mining and cement sectors.

The leadership change at Ørsted marks a pivotal moment for the company as it navigates a changing landscape in the renewable energy sector. With Errboe at the helm, Ørsted is poised to continue its commitment to sustainable energy solutions and drive innovation in the industry.
