MSC Cruises Unveils Third LNG-Powered Newbuilding, MSC World America

MSC Cruises, a subsidiary of Swiss shipping giant MSC Group, recently celebrated the delivery of its latest vessel, MSC World America, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The 333.3-meter-long cruise ship was officially handed over during a ceremony at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, on March 27, 2025.

Following the delivery, MSC World America is now preparing for its official naming ceremony scheduled for April 9, 2025, at the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal. The vessel will commence operations from Miami on April 12, offering passengers a luxurious and environmentally friendly cruise experience.

MSC World America has successfully completed sea trials and met all requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The ship is also equipped with shore power connectivity, allowing its engines to be shut off while in port to reduce local emissions. Additionally, the newbuilding features a wastewater treatment system and onboard recycling management plant to minimize waste output.

The delivery of MSC World America signifies a significant milestone for MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Alongside the handover of MSC World America, a coin ceremony was held for the sister vessel MSC World Asia, which is expected to enter service in the winter of 2026-27, offering sailings across the Mediterranean.

Furthermore, a steel-cutting ceremony took place for MSC World Atlantic, scheduled to begin operations in 2027. MSC World Atlantic will sail from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Caribbean, starting in the winter of the 2027-28 season.

It is worth noting that MSC World America is part of a series of LNG-fueled vessels, following the launch of MSC World Europa, the largest LNG cruise ship in the world, and MSC Euribia. The commitment to LNG technology underscores MSC Cruises’ dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship in the cruise industry.
