NG EXPLORER Vessel to Undergo Conversion for High-Spec Seabed Surveys

Next Geosolutions Europe S.p.A., a leading marine geosciences and offshore construction support services company, has entered into a collaboration agreement with the Norwegian shipyard Green Yard Kleven for the conversion of the vessel named NG EXPLORER. This conversion will enable the vessel to perform high-spec seabed surveys worldwide.

Vessel Specifications

The NG EXPLORER is a 58-meter-long and 14-meter-wide vessel with a draft of 4.5 meters, making it suitable for operations in shallow water environments. Originally built in 2010 as an offshore vessel, it has recently been utilized in aquaculture but will now be repurposed for offshore energy sector activities, specifically for geophysical, geotechnical, environmental, and UXO seabed investigations.

Conversion Details

As part of the conversion process, the vessel will undergo significant upgrades, including the installation of a new accommodation module to increase onboard personnel capacity, meeting rooms, a control room, and offices. Additionally, a launch and recovery system (LARS) for ROVs will be fitted, along with an A-frame and various deck equipment at the stern. The vessel will also be enhanced to operate in high-temperature waters.

Green Yard Kleven is committed to minimizing waste generation during the conversion process. Equipment and materials removed from the vessel will be reused in the conversion, repurposed for other projects at the yard, or sold to reduce environmental impact. The shipyard has previous experience in converting this vessel for another owner and is dedicated to extending the vessel’s lifespan and offering high-quality used equipment to the market.

Project Delivery

Green Yard Kleven will deliver a complete turn-key project to Next Geosolutions, including design and engineering services. The shipyard’s internal technical department, supported by Nelton Design, will oversee the project, coordinating equipment procurement and the re-classing process. The vessel is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, with Grieg Ship Brokers facilitating the purchase and conversion process.
