Norwegian Firm Vissim to Enhance Qatar’s Offshore Safety with Vessel Monitoring Solution

Norway-based software developer Vissim has been selected as a subcontractor by Qatar-based Bin Omran Trading & Telecommunications to provide a cutting-edge vessel monitoring solution. This technology aims to enhance the operational safety and efficiency of Qatar’s offshore assets.

The centralized vessel monitoring and alerting system (CVMAS) developed by Vissim will cover Qatar’s coastline and safeguard over 300 offshore assets. The system is scheduled to be operational by the first half of 2025.

Vissim’s system is designed to bolster safety and security for offshore assets, optimize vessel logistics, reduce CO2 emissions, and enhance maritime situational awareness.

“Our software systems offer a digitized and user-friendly overview of vessel traffic in Qatar’s waters, ensuring improved maritime safety for all vessels and infrastructure in the region,” stated Benedicte Stiberg, Vissim’s regional director for the Middle East.

The core of Vissim’s technology lies in a software platform that provides comprehensive situational awareness of the geographical area, promoting maritime safety, security, and efficiency.

Vissim’s CVMAS in Qatar integrates various data sources, including the automatic vessel identification system (AIS) and weather data, to offer a detailed maritime overview. The system can be seamlessly integrated with maritime tools and platforms, enhancing operational efficiency.

Additionally, the system can monitor helicopter traffic and personnel aboard offshore assets, further enhancing operational safety and efficiency.

“With 24/7 surveillance, the system continuously monitors maritime activities and uses an alarm mechanism to prioritize critical events, enhancing asset protection and maritime operations,” added Stiberg.

The processed data is presented at QatarEnergy’s Joint Operations Centre in Doha, providing real-time situational awareness and improving maritime coordination in Qatar’s waters.

Last year, Vissim was also chosen to deliver radar technology, vessel traffic management system software, and an oil spill detection system for Pertamina’s PAPA ONWJ oil platform off the coast of Indonesia.
