The Port of Long Beach Sets New Cargo Record in 2024

The Port of Long Beach achieved a remarkable feat in 2024 by handling a record-breaking 9.6 million cargo containers, marking a significant milestone in its operational history. This accomplishment was made possible through efficient management and strategic planning, resulting in a 20.3% increase from the previous year.

Importantly, the port surpassed its own 2021 record of 9.38 million TEUs by 2.8%, demonstrating its continuous growth and ability to meet increasing demands in the maritime industry.

A detailed analysis of the record-setting year revealed a surge in imports by 24.3% to 4.7 million TEUs, while exports experienced a slight decline of 5.9% to 1.2 million TEUs. The movement of empty containers also saw a significant increase of 26.6% to 3.7 million TEUs, showcasing the port’s versatility in handling various types of cargo.

In December, the Port of Long Beach excelled further by handling 861,006 TEUs, marking a 21.3% increase year-over-year and setting a new December record. This strong performance capped off the port’s busiest quarter ever, with 2.7 million TEUs moved between October and December.

Aside from its cargo handling achievements, the Port of Long Beach remains committed to environmental sustainability. CEO Mario Cordero emphasized the port’s progress in transitioning to zero emissions operations, citing the successful implementation of the Green Port Policy in 2005. This initiative has led to significant reductions in diesel emissions, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides, showcasing the port’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Looking ahead, the Port of Long Beach is embarking on innovative projects to further enhance its operations and sustainability efforts. These include the construction of “America’s Green Gateway” and a groundbreaking partnership with Toyota Motor North America for a “Tri-gen” system. Additionally, plans are underway for Pier Wind, a 400-acre terminal project expected to generate substantial economic benefits for the region.
