Stena Drilling’s Stena Carron Achieves Abate (P) Notation for Emission Reduction Efforts
Swedish offshore drilling contractor Stena Drilling has recently celebrated the award of an Abate (P) notation by DNV for its drillship, the Stena Carron. This accreditation comes as a result of the company’s dedication to implementing various technical and operational measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Stena Carron joins its sister vessel, the Stena DrillMAX, in receiving the prestigious Abate (P) notation from DNV, making it the second Stena Drilling rig to achieve this recognition. This milestone underscores the company’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions through the adoption of advanced measures.
DNV’s notation signifies best practices in emissions reduction, aligning with the industry’s push towards net-zero targets. Stena Drilling views the Abate (P) notation as a significant step in its journey towards emission reduction, recognizing units that demonstrate concrete progress in this area.
Stena Drilling has implemented a range of enhancements on the Stena Carron, including real-time energy and emission monitoring, optimized power usage for pumps, installation of Reverse Osmosis freshwater production plants, and energy awareness training for personnel. These measures have contributed to the rig’s improved energy efficiency and reduced carbon footprint.
CEO Erik Rønsberg expressed his delight at achieving the Abate (P) notation for the Stena Carron, highlighting the company’s investments in equipment, training, and innovation. Stena Drilling’s adoption of a certified ISO 50001 energy management system across its fleet further demonstrates its commitment to sustainability.
DNV praised Stena Carron for its energy efficiency initiatives, emphasizing the importance of technical innovation and operational efficiency in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The collaboration between DNV and Stena Drilling is set to continue in pursuit of sustainable drilling operations.
Andrew Calderwood, Energy Performance Superintendent at Stena Drilling, commended the vessel’s crew and engineering support teams for their ongoing commitment to energy awareness and sustainable operations. Their dedication plays a crucial role in enhancing the rig’s efficiency and minimizing its environmental impact.
The Stena Carron, a sixth-generation drillship designed for harsh environments, is currently operating on the Stabroek block off the coast of Guyana for ExxonMobil. The rig’s capabilities include advanced DP3 dynamic positioning technology and the ability to drill in water depths of up to 10,000 feet.
With the recent approval of a $51.2 billion investment in Guyana’s gas-to-energy project, the Stena Carron’s work in the region takes on added significance in advancing sustainable energy initiatives.
